New FDA Ruling on “Anti-Bacterial” Soap

New FDA Ruling on “Anti-Bacterial” Soap

When buying soaps and other washes, many people tend to reach for the products with “antibacterial” labels on them in hopes that they are more effective in killing germs than plain soap and water.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, this may not be the case. The FDA found that there is not enough science to back the claim that soaps labeled “antibacterial” are more effective than plain soap and water.

This finding came after the FDA issued a proposed rule back in 2013 requiring safety and efficiency data from manufacturers of antibacterial products, only to receive very little information to back claims that the antibacterial soaps are more effective in preventing illness or killing germs.

Furthermore, this raised concerns over the actual safety of the active ingredients and chemicals used in these antibacterial washes. There is no evidence that sufficiently proves that using soaps with antibacterial chemicals are safe for repeated human use over time.

As a result, the FDA has issued a rule that 19 active ingredients are no longer considered GRAS/GRAE (Generally Recognized as Safe/Effective) for use in over-the-counter consumer antiseptic washes intended for use as either a hand or body wash. This rule goes into effect on September 6th, 2017.

One of the ingredients affected in this ruling is triclosan, the most widely used chemical in antibacterial washes, and due to this recent FDA ruling, we would like to make all customers aware of the non-triclosan skin care solutions that we offer that are in compliance with this new FDA ruling.

The tables below show the alternative BETCO products that we currently offer that comply with the new FDA ruling:

Over the next 12 months, Silverback will be working closely with our suppliers to introduce additional non-triclosan washes. For information on this new ruling click here  or for help switching to new, non-triclosan washes, you can speak with one of our representatives by calling 800-746-6071
